Redefining Recovery 2012

In December of 2011 the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sent out a new definition for Recovery. The new definition is as follows: "A process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self directed life, and strive to reach their full potential". The definition was developed with the input from behavioral health leaders, mental health consumers and individuals in addiction recovery. The definition focuses on the common steps of the recovery experience.

SAMHSA also decided that there are four major areas that support a life of recovery. They are as follows:
  • Health: overcoming or managing one’s disease(s) as well as living in a physically and emotionally healthy way;
  • Home: a stable and safe place to live;
  • Purpose: meaningful daily activities, such as a job, school, volunteerism, family caretaking, or creative endeavors, and the independence, income and resources
  • to participate in society;
    Community: relationships and social networks that provide support, friendships, love and hope.
