Forte Wellness Alert

Sadly, since June of 2010 six of our consumers have been involved in pedestrian accidents resulting in 3 deaths, 1 near death (still in serious medical condition) and 2 with serious injuries who are expected to recover. Three occurred in the City of Harrisburg City. Three occurred in the suburbs. These accidents have some common denominators:

They all occurred in the dark, during the evening or early morning before dawn.
Several occurred where pedestrians are not allowed to cross
Five of the drivers have not been charged because the accident was not considered to be their fault, all stayed and offered assistance. One driver has been charged for leaving the scene
Five of the consumers were wearing dark clothing.
Only one consumer was intoxicated.

Please immediately bring this safety concern to the attention of your consumers and staff, whether by individual discussion, a group safety seminar, house meeting, posters, flyers, etc. and please emphasize the importance of:

Wearing clothing that can easily be seen at night.
Using reflective devices similar to what bicycle rider’s use if you are walking at night.
Only crossing at areas designated for pedestrian crossing.
Be especially careful with crossing in poor weather conditions (fog, rain, snow)
Remember that even cars that are going the speed limit are traveling fast, much faster than any person can walk or run.
Remember that many drivers are driving above the speed limit every where they drive.
If you are a driver please slow down and be especially vigilant at night and early in the morning before dawn.
