CBHNP was founded by service providers in 1994 and is a subsidiary of the AmeriHealth Mercy Family of Companies. AmeriHealth Mercy and its affiliates comprise the largest family of Medicaid managed care plans in the United States. Contracting with the HealthChoices program, CBHNP provides behavioral services to Medicaid recipient’s in twelve counties across Pennsylvania. With a focus on quality, CBHNP earned "full" accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for the Medicaid business line. NCQA is approved by the Department of Health as a certified utilization review entity and "full" accreditation is the highest ranking that is offered for Medicaid product lines and covers a three year period.
 
CBHNP was awarded the prestigious Blue Works Award in 2004 for the innovative risk-sharing program provided to First Priority Health, the HMO subsidiary of Blue Cross Northern PA. This award is given by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association for cost effective solutions to behavioral health challenges through innovative partnerships. Also, in 2005 CBHNP was ranked number one as third-party administrator in the Central Penn Business Journal based on revenues.
